Location

Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West Hospitals are located on Manhattan's west side, close to the mix of cultural, educational and recreational opportunities offered by the nation's largest city. Your home on the west side also features the best theater in the world on Broadway, Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Opera, running and biking paths along the Hudson River and the oasis of Central Park. A walk across Central Park leads to some of the country's leading art museums, including the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. New York is home to incredible cultural diversity, and with it some of the most unique neighborhoods and best dining in the country and world.

The Morningside Heights area, where Mount Sinai Morningside is located, is a very diverse neighborhood that is also home to Columbia University, Barnard College, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Riverside Church, and the Manhattan School of Music.




Entertainment, Sports, and Cultural Opportunities

As a resident in our program, you are also part of medicine in New York City. Our department provides medical staff for the finish line tent at the New York City Marathon and multiple other athletic events throughout the year, including the U.S. Open and the New York Jets. Our program also provides house physician coverage to Lincoln Center and the NYC Ballet allowing interested residents to attend performances.

Work Benefits

Salary

Salaries increase year-to-year and are competitive for the city. The pay scale for the 2021-2022 year is as follows:

  • PGY-1: $70,495.31

  • PGY-2: $73,314.12

  • PGY-3: $76,247.72

Educational Reimbursements

Residents receive an annual stipend to spend on educational purposes, including text books, journal subscriptions, and medical equipment. This amount varies based on the contract negotiated by CIR, the resident union.

In addition, Mount Sinai St. Luke's Roosevelt fully reimburses residents for the cost of USMLE Step 3 if the test is taken and passed in the first 18 months of residency.

Professional memberships to ACEP, SAEM and EMRA are financed by the department for residents giving access to all benefits of those professional organizations. Travel expenses are reimbursed for conference presentations at national meetings and significant participation in other national activities.

Transportation

Parking

Parking is available at a subsidized rate for housestaff who do not live in hospital housing.

Vacation

Residents receive 4 weeks of paid vacation each year.

Insurance

Individual and family health insurance is offered, including vision care and dental coverage. In addition, residents are provided with accidental death and disability coverage.

Work Hours

ED shifts are 12 hours for EM-1s and 10 hours for the EM-2s and EM-3s. All ED and off-service rotations are in compliance with NY State and Residency Review committee guidelines.


Live with your fellow residents

As a service to residents and other professional staff, Mt. Sinai Morningside and West maintain two apartment buildings conveniently located across the street from Mount Sinai West in midtown Manhattan. Studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments are offered, with subsidized housing guaranteed to all residents. This affordable housing, where most residents choose to live, adds to the strong sense of community within our program. The buildings are located within a seven minute walking distance to Columbus Circle, a shopping and transportation hub on the West side.

10 Amsterdam

This is the newer housing available to residents, consisting of 132 studio, one and two-bedroom apartments. All units have modern kitchens with dishwashers and central A/C. Card-operated laundry machines are located in the basement. The building provides 24-hour doorman service.

515 West 59th Street

Located diagonally across the street from Mount Sinai West Hospital, this 33 story development has 465 units primarily made up of studio apartments, all with central A/C. This pet-friendly building also provides 24-hour doorman service, card-operated laundry machines on the second floor and has a courtyard and nearby playground for children.
