Simulation
The simulation experience has increased substantially at MSMW since the beginning of our simulation fellowship in 2011. Under the supervision of the Director of Simulation, Dr. Heidi Baer, our Fellowship director, Dr. Joshua McHugh and our fellows, residents have routine exposure to and training in the simulation lab. There are two simulation labs at MSW and one at MSM.
Our Simulation division provides a longitudinal curriculum over the course of the academic year for residents. Simulation sessions occur both during conference and dedicated times on off service rotations.
EMS
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Disaster Preparedness Division of Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West has become the foundation of the EMS Service of the Mount Sinai Health System. With 12 ambulances working in the 9-1-1 System of New York City, we will respond to over 70,000 calls this year. Our mission is to provide the highest quality prehospital care and promote the integration of emergency services through the spectrum of care. As a partner with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), we strive to provide the highest level of patient care and customer service.
The Division works with the Residency leadership to provide a robust EMS and Disaster Preparedness experience throughout residency with an ambulance ride-along experience, EMS education and research opportunities, large event medicine (NYC Marathon Finish Line Tent and more) and disaster preparedness training.
Mount Sinai Morningside (MSM) and Mount Sinai West (MSW) Hospital Center Ambulance Service acquired its first ambulance in 1877, among the first on the streets of New York City. At Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West Hospital Center, the ambulance and its staff have been a part of that team since the era when the emergency department was run by a nurse and the doctor was on call well over 150 year ago.
Our ambulance service has always taken the lead and has been an innovator in the field of emergency medical services in New York City. It was on the streets when ambulances were drawn by horses, the first EMS service in New York City to employ women, and among the first to support full paramedic care. Ours was the first ambulance service to use thrombolytics in the field ("Out-of-Hospital Paramedic Administered Streptokinase for Acute Myocardial Infarction", Lancet, page 1187, 1988). Its area of service extends from Harlem, through Morningside Heights, Central Park, and the Upper West Side into the center of Midtown Manhattan and the theater district.
In the recent past, EMS providers from MSM and MSW have provided care during times of crisis and disaster, including the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, the landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, and numerous critical emergencies in New York City.
As a resident, during your Emergency Department clinical rotations, you will have the opportunity to learn from and ride along with the paramedics and EMTs at both Mt. Sinai St. Morningside and Mt. Sinai West.
Our pre-hospital division is led by an EMS fellowship trained physician, Dr. Michael Redlener, Medical Director for EMS and Disaster Preparedness.
Toxicology
Medical toxicology is a sub-specialty of Emergency Medicine. It is concerned with treating patients who have been exposed to poisons including medications, adverse drug reactions, environmental toxins, industrial chemicals, or bio-terrorism agents. Medical Toxicologists are certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Research
The toxicology division has an active basic science research program. Research areas include antidotes, intravenous fat emulsions, carnitine, chemical warfare agents, and cardiovascular toxins. The division's research has been presented at many national and international meetings.
Medical Student Research Elective
Medical students are welcome to participate in the toxicology research projects. Commitment is for 1 but preferable 2 months. Depending on level of participation, students have been included in abstracts, presentations and publications. Availability is limited.
Toxicology Consult Service
The Toxicology division provides as toxicology consult service. This is available to all inpatient services at SLR 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Toxicology Rotation
Our EM residents participate in a toxicology rotation at the NYC Poison Control Center. During this rotation, residents also participate in the Toxicology Consult Service and will evaluate toxicology patients admitted to the hospital or seen in the ED.
Research
Residents have the opportunity to join in ongoing research projects both locally and within the health system. Using both the expertise and opportunities available, residents succeed in completing scholarly work leading to multiple abstracts and publications each year.
One important resource hosted at our department is the Mount Sinai Research Associates program. This clinical research assistant program in the Emergency Departments of Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital consists mostly of undergraduate students interested in future careers in medicine.
